Η Εμινέ Σεβγκί Οζνταμάρ γεννήθηκε το 1946 στη Μαλάτια της Τουρκίας. Από το 1979 ζει στη Γερμανία. Ασχολήθηκε με το θέατρο και τον κινηματογράφο, ως ηθοποιός και σκηνοθέτης.

Από το 1986 εργάζεται ως συγγραφέας. Με το πρώτο της βιβλίο, που βγήκε το 1990, μια σειρά διηγημάτων με τον τίτλο «Μούτερτσουνγκε» («Μητρική γλώσσα»), κατακτά αμέσως το κοινό.

Με το δεύτερο βιβλίο της, το μυθιστόρημα «Η ζωή είναι ένα καραβανσεράι», απέσπασε το 1991 ένα από τα πιο σημαντικά λογοτεχνικά βραβεία, το «Ίγκεμποργκ Μπάχμαν», που την καθιέρωσε. Το 1992 πήρε την υποτροφία του Γερμανικού Λογοτεχνικού Ιδρύματος, το 1993 το βραβείο «Βάλτερ Χαζενκλέβερ», ενώ το 1994 η «Μητρική γλώσσα» κατατάσσεται στα “Best Books of Fiction published 1994 in America”.

Το 1995 παίρνει και πάλι την υποτροφία του Γερμανικού Λογοτεχνικού Ιδρύματος για μια παραμονή της στη Νέα Υόρκη.

Το 1998 εκδίδεται το δεύτερο μυθιστόρημά της, «Η γέφυρα του Χρυσού Κερατίου», για το οποίο παίρνει το 1999 το επίσης πολύ σημαντικό βραβείο «Άνταλμπερτ φον Σαμίσο».

Emine Sevgi Ozdamar was born in 1946 in Malatya in Turkey. She has lived in Germany since 1979.

She worked in the theatre and the cinema as an actor and director. Since 1986 she has been working as a writer. With her first book, which came out in 1990 and is a collection of short stories entitled “Mother Tongue”, she immediately won over the public. With her second book, the novel “Life is a Caravanserai” she won in 1991 one of the most important literary prizes, the “Ingeborg Bachmann Prize”, which established her as a writer.

In 1992 she was the recipient of a scholarship from the German Literary Foundation, the “Walter Hasenclever Prize” in 1993, while in 1994 Mother Tongue” was listed among the “Best Books of Fiction published 1994 n America”. In 1995 she again received a scholarship from the German Literary Foundation for a period in New York.

In 1998 she published he second novel “The Bridge of the Golden Horn” which won the equally prestigious “Adalbert von Chamisso” Prize.
